Jameson Irish Whiskey

23 Jul

Believe it or not, I haven’t been drinking whiskey since birth. My mother’s womb didn’t come equipped with a fifth and a lowball glass. In fact, I was beyond 21-years-old before I even tried the stuff. But when I did, boy, was I hooked. I can still tell you about my first taste.

One evening, I was winding down at a friend’s college duplex. One of my closest high school friends was in town visiting and we had just finished an epic evening beginning, of course, at The Library. I don’t remember the ride to my friend’s house, but I do recall slumping into his easy chair, hand gushing blood, and sipping a Coors Light. Clearly, I needed a shot, so my buddy handed me a double of Jameson Irish Whiskey.

It was love at first sip. From that day forward, I was a whiskey man.

Since then, I’ve had plenty of different blends of bourbon, Irish and otherwise, but Jameson remains among my favorites. If you’re looking to break into the whiskey world, I would recommend starting with this one. It’s sweet, so you won’t be overpowered by the alcohol at first and can ease yourself into it. Kind of like how you’re drinking cocktails and each drink you make gets a little stronger because you can’t taste the alcohol.

Jameson is also great for mixing. It’s very affordable (normally around $25 for a 750 mL) so you don’t feel like you’re wasting money by diluting it with mixers, and if you’re still new to it, you can start with Jameson and Cokes, and slowly move toward on-the-rocks without looking like you can’t handle it.

John Jameson, I salute you.
